BES Software Now Free

Recently RIM made the bold (excuse the pun) move to effectively release a free version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Software for free - called BES Express.

This version allows small to medium sized enterprises to take advantage of the world’s leading mobile email solution provider.

So whats the difference between BES and BES Express?

Effectively BES express lacks some of the key features for managing large fleets such as high availability, shared databases and it has less IT policies than the full version

For a comparison see this comparsion chart from RIM

Where do I get BES Express?

You can download the software from the RIM website

Phonenomena can assist you with a managed installation or BlackBerry User Training or Administrator Training

What else do I need to run BES Express?

You need a BlackBerry plan enables on your mobile number and a BlackBerry device.  So contact Phonenomena today to get the latest BlackBerry handset and have your mobile number enabled for BlackBerry!

International Roaming - Cheaper Data

Heading Overseas with an iPhone or BlackBerry?

Make sure you don’t come home to a nasty mobile bill with our guide to minimising your International Roaming Data costs

Telstra have recently realesed new data packs to save you money when using data overseas. By default Telstra’s rates for data roaming is currently $15 per MB. Think about how much a few large attachments could cost! The new Roaming Data Packs below to make this a lot cheaper with $29 for 10MB and $160 for 60MB (see below).

Call Phonenomena today on 1300 721 281 to activate a data roaming pack on your Telstra service

iPhone Tips

  • Add a Roaming Data pack
  • Turn off data roaming so your handset doesn’t automatically download emails and update all your iPhone apps etc. Go to: Settings - General - Network - Data Roaming - Off
  • Use WiFi - not the mobile networks. Find free WiFi hotspots to check your email etc. Setting - General - Network - WiFi - On

BlackBerry Tips

Your capped BlackBerry data plan does not apply when overseas however BlackBerry has the added luxury of compressing emails and attachments better than other devices - but this doesn’t mean you can’t get large bills

  • Use WiFi where possible (Manage Connection - Tick WiFi)
  • Add a Roaming Data pack (see below)

Laptop Tips

Mobile Broadband devices (USB modems etc) will use the most data as it is harder to control how much data your laptop uses (automatic updates, viruses etc)

  • Use WiFi hotspots!
  • Never use a mobile network without at least adding a Roaming Data pack. Even then, think twice about how important it is.
  • Use a BlackBerry or iPhone instead

International Roaming Data Plan Pricing

Call Phonenomena on 1300 721 281 to have one of the below data packs applied to your iPhone, BlackBerry or Mobile broadband device before you go overseas.

And remember you need to call on return to have the plan turned off as they are billed monthly.

  • The International Roaming Data Plans are only available in selected countries.
  • The monthly data allowance covers data carriage but does not cover content purchase charges, use while in Australia, use in non-eligible countries or to make/receive voice/video calls or send/receive SMS/MMS messages when roaming.

Telstra Achieve 21Mbps

Even faster for early 2009

Ericsson and Telstra have achieved an industry first: the successful activation of HSPA Evolution functionality capable of peak network speeds up to 21 Mbps into the Telstra Next G™ commercial network and the world’s first data call on the newly-enabled network. For the first time, a commercial network makes use of the enhanced, standardized improvements called HSPA Evolution.

This enhancement adds a new dimension to broadband experience with significantly faster internet browsing and file download, even faster than many fixed broadband connections. With HSPA Evolution, operators will increase the capacity in the networks and reduce the costs to deliver Mobile Broadband services.
“Ericsson continues to bring the best possible Mobile Broadband experience to consumers all over the world,” says Ulf Ewaldsson, Vice President and Head of Product Area Radio, Ericsson. “Ericsson has an impressive list of HSPA world-first records, including the first commercial HSPA network, first live with HSPA on the Uplink and also first with 1.9Mbps on the Uplink, soon to be upgraded to 5.8Mbps. With our achievement of 21Mbps in Telstra’s network we continue Ericsson’s technology leadership in the Mobile Broadband area. We thank Telstra for the close co-operation to reach this milestone.”
Michael Rocca, Group Managing Director, Telstra Networks & Services says the upgrade maintains the Next G™ network’s position as the most advanced national wireless network in the world. “HSPA Evolution is live and working for the first time anywhere in the world in a commercial network on the Telstra Next G™ network in Australia,” Michael says. “Ericsson and Telstra are seeing great results ahead of upcoming trials and device deployment.”

Mike Wright, Executive Director Telstra Wireless made the first data call on the Next G™ network in Brisbane, Queensland at 16:00 AEST on 5 December 2008. Trials of the 21Mbps mobile broadband service on Telstra’s Next G™ network will begin this month with a full commercial launch to follow early next year.

“Free” Phones or Buy Outright - which is better?

We often get asked which is better - take the “free” phone deal or buy it outright?  We discuss the issues below and try and cut through some of the “marketing” for you.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?

With any ‘phone deal’ you normally have 2 options - The Phone or The “Cash”

1)  Take a “free” phone
You get one free handset in return for a 24-month contract on a particular number.  Free* always has a disclaimer*.  Don’t panic, your phone is technically free but needs a* as there are higher cancellation costs with these plans

2) Take the “cash”
What we will call “cash” comes in the form of either a monthly credit or if you are a larger corporate you may have a technology fund to use.  (A third option in larger corporate accounts is no technology fund in return for cheaper call rates)

WHAT TO CHOOSE?

One simple piece of logic is - What is worth more - the phone or the cash?

Business Example
EG Over 24-months on an $80 plan you get either $15 per month totaling $360 or a free phone worth between $409 and $999.  So a $409-$999 phone or $360 cash.    Take the phone right?

Corporate Plan Example
Over 24 months you get equivalent of $199 per user in a fund or a free phone worth $499.  Once again - take the phone right?

There’s a lot more than just the $$ of course…

WHY TAKE THE FREE PHONE

* More Value - As above, you get far more value of hardware than if you had to buy
* No upfront costs
* Opex vs Capex
- no ‘budgets’ to get approved
* Fleet Refreshes - great if you need a fleet refresh or in particular want to roll out higher-end devices such as BlackBerry or PDA’s
* Use Data Plans - on some data plans you can get the phone for free, leaving your voice plan to take advantage of the ‘cash’ still (eg BlackBerry Plans).  Sometimes it can be the opposite however, take the handset for free on the voice plan and leave your data plan on a casual contract for flexibility - discuss with us your particular strategy to help decide this.

WHY TAKE THE CASH

* Choice - Sometimes the handset you want may not be available for “free” but you can still buy it from us outright
* Lower cancellation fees - understandably if you have been given a free handset the carrier has a right to have a higher cancellation fee to get the cost of the handset back if you choose to leave early. Hint - check the cost of the cancellation fee vs that of the phone.
* More flexibility - in our experience “free phone plans” tend to be less flexible to change before contract expiry (if this is possible at all) - mainly due to the fact they have higher cancellations fees.  The rules around this change but ‘in general’ it’s easier to negotiate a different plan in advance of your contract expiry if you bought your own handsets.
* $0 upfront - you can still have $0 upfront by using a Mobile Repayment Option
* Replacement Costs - by taking expensive free phones, you can be setting a new “standard” in handsets that staff expect to keep.  If expensive phones get broken outside of warranty, staff expect them to be replaced with the same model which will cost you more. Expensive phones can actually be less fragile due to the styling or PDA design.
Corporates
* Contracts
- your individual numbers may have no contracts normally but with a free phone plan they will have a 24-month plan.  You therefore can’t add and delete users at will and can end up with lots of spare numbers you have to keep track of.
* Call costs - you may get more value by negotiating cheaper call costs with no free handsets or less technology funds.

CONCLUSION

While we don’t have a hard and fast solution for you we would say:

* Focus on your needs - not wants. Do you need new handsets now?  How long will your current fleet last anyway?

* If the ‘cash’ is close to the value of the phone you need (not want) - take the cash
* Pick solutions and value first and handsets last - Don’t let “free phones” drive your plan choice or carrier decision!
* Don’t set a standard you can’t keep - more expensive (& more fragile) handsets may not even be required and you will be obligated to replace them if staff break them!
* Talk to us - to make sure you understand all the future issues.
