Manage Android And iOS Devices With Blackberry Enterprise Service 10

In an effort to retain a foothold in the Enterprise, Blackberry have launched an app called Secure Work Space that allows businesses to secure and manage employees’ Android and iOS devices.

The move indicates that Blackberry is certainly considering focusing more on services rather than hardware as it seeks to stay relevant in a saturated market dominated by Apple and Samsung. Secure Work Space helps clients fully manage all of the devices they support, even if they aren’t necessarily BlackBerry devices, making it easier to manage a more diverse mobile fleet:

It will be managed through Blackberry’s Blackberry Enterprise Service (BES) 10, the latest version of their proprietary device management software for businesses. It is essentially an extension of BES device management, offering containerization, application-wrapping and secure connectivity for iOS and Android devices (via the BES 10 administration console).

To address the increasing concerns regarding the separation of personal and corporate data on the same device, Secure Work Space containerizes corporate apps and data using 256- bit AES encryption. This ensures that all corporate data will be kept separate from any personal data on the device and vice versa.

Secure Work Space also saves both end users and IT a considerable amount of time, administration and expense by allowing users of iPhones and Android devices to access data and applications behind corporate firewalls without needing to manage and configure expensive VPN infrastructures. Third-party platforms have also been taken into consideration, with the service including secured client applications for email, calendar, contacts, tasks, memos, secure browsing and document editing (via Blackberry’s Documents To Go).

“With an integrated management console, our clients can now see all of the devices they have on their network, manage those devices and connect to them securely.”

From BlackBerry’s standpoint, this could be one of the most important apps in the company’s portfolio. It lets businesses use BlackBerry services to a full extent even if some (or all) of their employees are using non-BlackBerry smartphones, which paves the way for a Blackberry potentially focused more on services rather than hardware.
