Telstra Unveils World First LTE Advanced Wi Fi Modem

Telstra have announced the launch of a new Wi-Fi 4G LTE Advanced Modem, which they state is one of the first devices globally to support a LTE-Advanced network.

The LTE-Advanced network uses a process called carrier aggregation, which combines Telstra’s 1800MHz and the 900MHz (old 2G network) spectrum bands together. This creates a broader channel through which more data can be pushed, with the use of the lower 900MHz spectrum extending the reach and performance of the 4G signal within buildings.

Telstra’s Director of Devices, Andew Volard states that the Telstra Wi-Fi 4G Advanced is the company’s most sophisticated mobile broadband product. Indeed, “the Telstra Wi-Fi 4G Advanced is notable for being one of the world’s first LTE Advanced-compatible products and it will operate in this mode in some locations where we have a lower 4G band in place for coverage or capacity,” Volard said in a media statement.

The 2.4 inch touch screen allows users to manage settings without a PC or web browser, making it easier to use. It also features an on-screen data meter integrated with Telstra’s online billing system, with the 25oomAh battery providing up to 10 hours of active usage. To boost speed, the modem uses dual antennas through a technology called MIMO. The Wi-Fi 4G Advanced modem can connect up to 10 Wi-Fi enabled devices at a time.

While the LTE-A network is still being tested (with Telstra pinning the roll out for 2014), the device also supports Telstra current 4G LTE network.

Phonenomena expects stock to arrive later this week.
