How To: Set Up Mail For Android

Setting up your email address is likely one of the first things you want to do when you get a new device.

So, if you’ve got your hands on a new Android device, how do you set up your email account?

Setting Up A Work Email?

If you are setting up a work email, it is best to consult with your IT department before beginning the process below.

There may be specific configurations required for your work email, or your company may require all work emails to be set up by IT personnel on mobile devices.

Adding A New AccountSetting Up mail Android

  1. Go to Settings Accounts & Sync > tap the ‘+’ button > tap Mail
  2. Enter the email address and password for your mail account.
  3. Tap Manual Setup.

Entering Configuration Settings

  1. Under Protocol, select either IMAP or POP. We recommend using IMAP if you will be accessing your emails from multiple devices. To help you decide which protocol to use, check out this guide to IMAP vs POP.

    For This Field Do This
Username Your username will be your email address. This should be auto populated based on what you entered in previously for your username.
Password Enter the password for your account. This should be auto populated based on what you entered in previously for your password.
POP/IMAP Server Type the incoming server information for your account. If you do not have this information contact your provider.

An incoming email server address might look like:

    • imap.example.com
    • incoming.example.com
    • mail.example.com
Security Type For added security, we recommend selecting ‘SSL’ (Secure Sockets Layer).

SSL encrypts the conversation between your mail program and the mail server, preventing third-parties from viewing your email.

Select ‘None’ if you do not wish to use SSL.

Server Port Enter in the port setting. Your account provider should have provided you with this information.

If you do not have this information, you can try the default port numbers as per below:

    • IMAP SSL port number: 993
    • Unsecured IMAP port number: 143
