How To: Set Up Mail Windows Phone

Setting up your email address is likely one of the first things you want to do when you get a new device.

So, if you’ve got your hands on a new Windows Phone device, how do you set up your email account?

 

Setting Up A Work Email?

If you are setting up a work email, it is best to consult with your IT department before beginning the process below.

There may be specific configurations required for your work email, or your company may require all work emails to be set up by IT personnel on mobile devices.

 

Adding A New Account

  1. Go to Settings Email + Accounts.
  2. Tap Add an account Advanced Setup.
  3. Enter the email address and password.
  4. Tap Next.

 

Entering Configuration Settings

  1. Select Internet email as the account type.
  2. Enter a name for your email account in Account Name. This name will show in the list of accounts setup on your device.
  3. In Your Name key in the  ‘From’ name you would like to appear in emails sent by you.
  4. Fill in the following fields:

 

 

For This Field Do This
Incoming Email Server Type the incoming server information for your account. If you do not have this information contact your provider.An incoming email server address might look like:imap.example.com
incoming.example.com
Account Type Select either IMAP or POP. We recommend using IMAP if you will be accessing your emails from multiple devices.To help you decide which protocol to use, check out this guide to IMAP vs POP.
Username Your username will be your email address. This should be auto populated based on what you entered in previously for your username.
Security Type For added security, we recommend selecting ‘SSL’ (Secure Sockets Layer). SSL encrypts the conversation between your mail program and the mail server, preventing third-parties from viewing your email.

Select ‘None’ if you do not wish to use SSL.

Server Port Enter in the port setting. Your account provider should have provided you with this information.

If you do not have this information, you can try the default port numbers as per below:

IMAP SSL port number: 993

Unsecured IMAP port number: 143

POP3 SSL port number: 995

Unsecured POP3 port number: 110

 

If the above do not work you will need to contact your service provider.

Outgoing (SMTP) Email Server This is the outgoing server information for your account, enter the server address. If you do not have this information contact your provider.

Outgoing email server names typically appear such as the below:

smtp.example.com

Outgoing Server Requires Authentication You can select whether you would like to use SMTP authentication when sending emails.
Use the same username and password for sending email If you enabled authentication for the outgoing server,you will need to enter your username and password OR you can check this option to use the username and password details you have previously entered.

 

Press Advanced Settings.

Require SSL for Incoming Emails, Require SSL for outgoing emails Here you can select whether to use SSL to improve security for incoming and outgoing emails.

We recommend selecting ‘SSL’ (Secure Sockets Layer). SSL encrypts the conversation between your mail program and the mail server, preventing third-parties from viewing your email.

Select ‘None’ if you do not wish to use SSL.

Download New Content Select how often you would like emails to be synced.

The ‘Manual’ option will ensure that new emails are only synced when you open your chosen Mail app.

Download Email From Select the period of time for which you would like emails to synchronise.

You can select a specific period or select ‘any time’.

 

Press sign in to finish setup.

Your email should now be up and running!
