How to: Find a Lost or Stolen Android Device with Where’s My Droid App

No doubt you’re quite attached to your smartphone.

After all, it helps you remember important events, access files and online services on the go and stores all of your personal information.

So, when you lose or have your device stolen, it’s easy to panic. Your personal data becomes vulnerable and it almost feels like you’ve lost a part of yourself.

If you’ve lost your Android device, here is how to secure it quickly and hopefully get it back.

How does Where’s my Droid work?

o   Go to Commander 2.0 https://wmdcommander.appspot.com/

o   Log in with your Username/Email and Password

o   Click the Find link

o   Click the feature you want to use

 

Ring Feature

RING

o   Select Ring

o   Click Make device Ring button

o   Your phone will begin to ring loudly even if your phone is on silent/vibrate (depending on your personal settings)

OR (Using Someone Else’s Mobile)

o   Using some else’s phone, text your “Ring Attention Word” to your lost/stolen device phone number

o   Your phone will begin to ring loudly even if your phone is on silent/vibrate (depending on your personal settings)

 

GPS Feature

GPS

o   Select GPS

o   Select Quick Location (for a vague location) or select Accurate Location (for more precise location – this will take much longer)

o   The map will show the location of your device

OR (Using Someone Else’s Mobile)

o   Using some else’s phone, text your “GPS Attention Word” to your lost/stolen device phone number

o   You will receive up to four texts messages. The content of these messages include:

i.            Informing you that the app is attempting to find the GPS coordinates

ii.            The latitude and longitude location of your device

iii.            A Google map link

iv.             The nearest address.

 

 

Camera Feature

CAMERA

o   Select Camera

o   Use the back or front of the camera to take a picture use the buttons

o   The device will take a picture with the camera and it will save the image to the SD card

o   Where’s my Droid will upload the picture to their service

o   Click the link provided to view the picture

OR (Using Someone Else’s Mobile)

o   Using some else’s phone, text your “Camera Attention Word” to your lost/stolen device phone number

o   The lost device will take a picture with the camera and it will be saved onto the SD card

o   Where’s my Droid will upload the picture to their server and text you back with a link to the picture

 

Lock Feature

LOCK

o   Select Lock

o   Enter in a four-six digit PIN to lock your device

o   Click the lock button

OR (Using Someone Else’s Mobile)

o   Using some else’s phone, text your “Lock Attention Word” to your lost/stolen device phone number along with your four-six digit PIN

o   You will receive a confirmation text reply is the lock was successful or an explanation to why it was unsuccessful

 

Wipe Feature

WIPE

(Remote Wipe will delete all data permanently off your device. Use it only if your device is lost without any chance for recovery.)

o   Select Wipe

o   Select Wipe SD card (data from your external and internal SD cards will be wiped)OR Select Wipe Device (a factory reset of the device will occur)

OR (Using Someone Else’s Mobile)

Using some else’s phone, text your “Wipe Attention Word” to your lost/stolen device phone number

o   Your lost/stolen device will text back asking you to confirm the wipe

o   To continue with the wipe, reply “Confirm Remote Wipe” or “No” to cancel the wipe

o   You will receive a conformation text if the wipe is  successful
