How To: Set Up VPN On iOS

Looking to set up a VPN on your iPhone or iPad?

Whether you want to use your mobile device to connect to your company’s servers or improve your security when browsing the internet, follow our step by step guide below!

 

Note

As iOS only supports certain protocols and authentication methods for VPN, you will need to check whether the VPN you intend to use is properly configured to work with iOS. To check which protocols and authentication methods are supported by iOS for VPN, click here or check with your IT department.

 

Configuring A VPN

  1. Go to Settings > General > VPN
  2. Choose Add VPN Configuration
  3. Enter in the VPN configuration settings:
    Field Description
    Category: Refers to the protocol you will be using (i.e. PPTP, L2TP, IPsec).
    Description: Name your VPN so you can easily identify it in your list of VPNs.
    Server: Enter the server address supplied by your third-party hosted VPN provider.
    Account: Enter the user ID supplied by your third-party hosted VPN provider.
    Password: Enter the password supplied by your third-party hosted VPN provider.
    Encryption Level: Select the encryption level specified by your third-party hosted VPN provider. You can select from Auto, Maximum, None.

     

  4. Tap Save

 

Connecting To A VPN

After you have created a new VPN configuration, you should see an option to turn VPN on or off in the Settings menu.

To switch to a different VPN configuration:

Go to Settings > General > VPN and select the VPN you wish to use.
